Belur

Set in the Western Ghats, Belur is a popular Karnataka tourist stop. Its scenery draws birdwatchers and picnickers alike.

Bandaje Falls

A roughly 200 ft waterfall in the Charmadi ghat section of the Western Ghats, Belthangady taluk, Dakshina Kannada. Reached only by trekking through forest and grassland with local guides; it goes dry in summer.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

Named after the Bhadra River and popularly known as Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary, this Project Tiger reserve shelters mammals, reptiles and over 250 bird species, many endemic to the Western Ghats.

Bettadadevara Gudi

An ancient hilltop temple, said to be over 600 years old, overlooking the whole valley. Reach it by a steep motorable road or by steps. Just 10 km from Edgestay.

Devaramane

In Mudigere taluk, between Shiradi and Charmadi Ghat. Devaramane Hills in Gutti village offer peaks, grasslands, gurgling streams and waterfalls, lush even in summer.

Devaramane Temple

Kala Bhaireshwara temple in Mudigere. Legend says Shiva sent Nandi to help farmers on earth; the temple dates back some 900 years to Chola rule.

Devrunda Temple

A fine example of Hoysala craftsmanship built between the 11th and 14th centuries, known as Dakshina Kashi. It is said to have been built overnight and is over 500 years old.

Drona Parvatha

Also known as Chandra Drona Parvatha or Datta Peeta, with several high mountain rises, three caves and three siddhas. A beacon is lit here during Deepavali.

Hornadu

A Hindu holy village in Chikmagalur district with the Annapoorneshwari Temple, where the goddess was installed by Adi Shankaracharya; a new deity was consecrated in 1973.

Halebeedu

The 12th-century capital of the Hoysala Empire, once called Dorasamudra, in Hassan district. Famed for the ornate Hoysaleshwara and Kedareshwara temples.

Jhari Falls

A must-see near Mullayanagiri, on the way to Datta Peeta or Kemmannagundi. A 1 km walk from where you park, amid dense greenery and birdsong.

Kallathigiri Falls

Near Kemmannugundi, 46 km north of Chikmagalur. A small temple sits between the waterfall and the rocks, drawing pilgrims and travellers all year.

Manjarabad Fort

Built by Tipu Sultan as a defensive position controlling routes from the coast up to the plateau beyond Sakleshpur, and used to store ammunition and watch for British forces from Mangalore.

Mullayanagiri Peak

The highest peak in Karnataka at 1,930 m (6,330 ft), in the Datta Peeta range — the highest between the Himalayas and the Nilgiris, and a favourite trek.

Magajahalli Falls

A calm roadside waterfall near Sakleshpur, cascading about 20 ft with water almost all year. Easy to miss without a local. Just 11 km from Edgestay.

Pandava Hills

Near Bettadadevara Gudi in Mudigere taluk: misty trails, grassland and a memorable sunset view. Legend says the Pandavas stayed here during their exile. 11 km from Edgestay.

Z Point

A vantage point at Kemmangundi, reached by a steep 45-minute uphill trek from Raj Bhavan, loved for sunrise. Beware slippery paths and snakes; Shanthi Falls is nearby.
